Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong "Satchmo" (for Satchel Mouth) was born August 4, 1901, in
New Orleans, La., U.S. He was the leading trumpeter and one of the most
influential artists in jazz history. He grew up in dire poverty in New
Orleans. As a child he worked odd jobs and sang in a boy's quartet when jazz
was young. In 1913 he was sent to the Colored Waifs Home where he learned to
play the cornet in their band. In his teens, the pioneer jazz artists,
including King Oliver, inspired him. He replaced Oliver in the important Kid
Ory band and by the early 1920s he was playing on in Mississippi riverboats.
Satchmo was a bandleader, singer, soloist, film star, and comedian. He made
the greatest impact on the evolution of jazz. With his technique, and
ability to express emotion, Armstrong made jazz a fine art.
Joe Glaser, beginning with Pennies from Heaven, 1936 until his death on July
6, 1971, New York, N.Y, managed Louis' career.
